The Wrath of Con: Friday Night Italian

Ah Friday, halfway thru Comic-con.  That night, we met up with some friends for dinner and looked for a spot that could accommodate 6 and didn’t have an insane several hour wait.  Fortunately, less than a block away from the Hard Rock Hotel was Toscana, a little Italian cafe that had a table for 6 free right then and there.  And, they could make a special order for one of our party members who’s allergic to garlic…

My appetite wasn’t feeling pasta since I had it the night before.  There was a bacon-wrapped filet mignon with a risotto on the specials menu but that sounded too heavy.  I was craving salad.  I know, weird….but the body craves what the body wants and I had to listen.  I opted for the antipasto salad, a mix of greens with salami, garbanzo beans, mozzarella cheese and a balsamic dressing, if memory serves me right.  Since I was pretty hungry, I decided to also go for the bruschetta.  However, they were out of it so I got the prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella as an alternative.

Proscuitto wrapped mozzarella

The appetizer was okay.  The mozzarella was bland but having a bit of prosciutto and the balsamic drizzle helped.  I’m not sure if I would order this again though.  I found the salad disappointing; it was mostly greens with just a tiny bit of salami and mozzarella.  I was hoping for something a bit more…substantial.  Definitely not worth the price I paid (somewhere between $12-14 range, I think).  However, I did have a bite of my husband’s lasagna and that was fantastic.  The sauce was rich and meaty; the pasta sheets cooked a little past al dente.  Most everyone else in my party ordered pasta, too, and seemed to enjoy their meals.  One person ordered the filet special and raved about it.  I definitely missed out by following my salad craving… Maybe there’s a lesson there?

I would go back to Toscana as it was a nice little comfy eatery with great friendly service.  And the lack of a long wait was a definite plus.  But I think I’ll get the lasagna next time…

2 1/2 NOMs for Toscana.  I think if I eat there again and try other things, it’ll get a better rating.

  1. For some reason the thought of taking someone who is allergic to garlic to an Italian Restaurant struck me as humorous…. it’s like taking someone allergic to fish sauce to eat Vietnamese Food! ;o)

  2. We like to torture my friend like that. ;) Hahaha…
